Learning Style Quiz
For our Education 525 class, we were asked to take a Learning Style Inventory Quiz. After being asked about 40 questions, we were then taken to a results page where I found out what my learning style was. According to these results, the only styles I had a strong preference to were intuitive and visual. From the results description page, I found out that most college classes are geared towards intuitive learners. However, being spontaneous and jumping to conclusions on an exam is not always a good idea. It's important to really take your time and think things through when you are taking an exam. I also have to try to focus harder if a teacher is giving a long boring lecture that consists of lots of facts and data.
As for the visual learner results, I am more likely to remember what I see rather than what I hear. When I am in class, I will have to write down everything that the teacher says or else I will forget it. However, I will remember the diagram that they drew and be able to explain the basic concept of it. One of the suggestions they gave was to color code your notes with highlighters, which is what I already do. It helps me locate information quickly when I am studying or doing homework. When it comes to how I learn, I can easily see how I do both of these on a regular basis. I’m amazed at how one little questionnaire could be so accurate.
Based on these results, I think that using multimedia that requires me to read a lot of information would give me the most problems. One example of multimedia that I think I would have the biggest problem with are Power Point presentations. While there is something for me to visually look at, most Power Point presentations resemble a more legible version of what would have been written on the board. However, when they are making Power Point presentations, they try to put less information on the slides in order to have more focus on the main ideas. This would require me to really focus on what the teacher is saying and take more notes at the same time. When I have to do this, I sometimes miss important information because I am trying too hard to write down what they are saying at the same time. When a teacher is writing the notes on the board, they need to take time to write the information on the board and then to discuss it. You can easily keep up with what they are saying and copy the notes at the same time when they do this.
I know a Power Point presentation is something that is easy to use and a great visual to have when you are actually presenting something. However I feel that if teachers are going to use them to lecture, they will need to be more careful about what information they put on them and how they will use them. I did have one teacher who would have the lectures available online in advance. By doing this, I was able to print them out before class and look at the basic ideas. When I was in class, I would take more notes in the column on the side. I found this to be effective.
I went to Penn State for Graphic Arts and Meteorology. I learned a lot of different computer programs while I was there and would really like to be able to incorporate some of these programs into my lectures. I just don’t know how to effectively do that yet. I think I would like to learn more about web design if anything at all. I only had one class on this and it was earlier on in college. I think every teacher should have their own web page. It’s a great place to post what chapters they are currently on and the homework so that the parents can check up on their children to make sure they are doing everything. The teachers could also post the homework as a pdf in case the student forgot their worksheet at school. There are just so many things that the teacher can put on their website. I think learning the basics of how to create a web page would be beneficial to everyone.

My task was the current event this week, but I can tell you that I have taken the learning styles inventory numerous times before and I am also a strong visual learner. Another suggestion (from personal experience) may be to record lectures (with permission from the professor). I find recordings are nice because you can re-play those parts you have difficulty with as many times as you would like. You can pause the tape to take notes or to organize the notes graphically. I did this in a few classes in which the professor had a strong accent or was otherwise hard for me to understand.
I used to use the same highlighter trick when I was in high school, and I used to think it was something original I had come up with. It did help me to organize information though. It's interesting to hear the study tricks other people use.

I think most people, like us, are visual learners - it just seems easier. Do you know if anyone registered as a verbal learner? You stressed website design - I think your idea that everyone should get instruct on it is a good idead (I never have). Why not make it a requirement, like any basic subject?
Jennifer's comment was intersting, as she mentioned recording the lectures - would that not involve using audio learning skills? (or did you mean take video?)
